Complimentary Webinar Highlights Utilization Management’s Role in Managed Care
Thought leaders to offer valuable insights in RegQuest-sponsored presentations

Annapolis, MD / PRWeb / March 23, 2016 – RegQuest™, one of the nation’s premier online regulatory compliance resources focusing on medical management and insurance functions, is pleased to announce the first in a series of webinars focusing on the evolution of utilization management (UM) programs and related medical management functions over the past three decades with a detailed overview of how UM programs are regulated.

“As a practice, UM interventions are geared to standardize care, contain costs, improve quality and patient safety, and reduce unnecessary medical treatments,” notes Julie O’Brien, President of Alicare Medical Management and featured speaker on the webinar. “Over the past 40 years, UM practices and managed care have been largely interdependent. Tracking this relationship has unveiled some interesting trends in terms of the role of UM practices within the larger picture of healthcare as a whole. Their popularity has waxed and waned almost in tandem with managed care.”

“The webinar series offers an important opportunity to hear from thought leaders on the complex web of rules, policies and practices that affect how medical care is actually paid for and who is impacted in the process,” says O’Brien. “From the Affordable Care Act to MHPEA, a number of factors are having a significant impact on the delivery of care and the medical management system as a whole.”

Among other issues, speakers will highlight the impact of the Affordable Care Act and other regulatory reforms on the ways that health plans make “medical necessity” determinations and how the appeals process works when a “denial” of care or adverse benefit determination is made. In addition, the presentation will review the scope, licensure requirements, reviewer qualifications and the ways in which UM services are often integrated into a “care coordination” approach to managing patients. The session will also examine liability issues associated with the “corporate practice of medicine”.
